Andy Dorman

How Acquired: Signed by the Revolution on November 15, 2012

A veteran central midfielder who is in his second spell with the Revs, Andy Dorman provides a calming influence in the center of the park for Jay Heaps’ side. After playing for the club from 2004-07, when he was a teammate of his current head coach, Dorman moved to Europe, playing in England and Scotland before returning to the Revs ahead of the 2013 campaign. An intelligent two-way player, Dorman ranks in the top 10 in club history in a number of statistical categories including games played and assists.

2014: Started 15 of the 16 games in which he appeared for the Revs, tallying one assist while missing two months because of a right knee injury. He made his season debut at Philadelphia on March 15 and started the next 13 matches, including a 3-1 loss to the Union on June 28 in which he tallied his only assist of the year. He was also shown his sixth yellow card of the year in that game, leading to a one-game suspension. In his next game, against Chicago on July 12, he suffered a sprained right MCL and was placed on the Disabled List three days later. He was removed from the Disabled List on September 12, but did not return to action until the regular-season finale against Toronto FC on October 25, coming on in the 67th minute of that game. He appeared in three of the Revs’ five postseason games, playing a total of 43 minutes, including 31 minutes in MLS Cup against the LA Galaxy. Dorman also made one appearance in the U.S. Open Cup, playing 90 minutes in the quarterfinal at Philadelphia on July 8.

2013: Returned to the Revs ahead of the start of the 2013 season, but was limited to just 12 regular-season appearances and three starts. His only assist of the season came on October 19 when he set up Diego Fagundez’s late game-winning goal against Columbus at Gillette Stadium, a game in which he also drew a penalty. Made his 2013 debut as a halftime substitute in central midfield at Philadelphia on March 16 for his first appearance in an MLS regular-season match in more than five years. Dorman was sent off twice on the year after having not been sent off in his first four years with the club. Despite making just three starts in the regular season, Dorman started both of the club’s games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against Sporting Kansas City, scoring the first postseason goal of his career In the first leg of that series to give New England a 2-1 win. He also started all three of his team’s U.S. Open Cup matches, scoring the game-winning goal in the Revs’ 5-1 win over Rochester on May 28 in the Third Round.

2007: Appeared in all 30 regular-season games, starting 27, and scoring a career-best seven goals to go along with two assists to finish second on the team in scoring. Tallied three goals in a four-game span early in the season, with the Revs going 1-0-2 in games at home against Toronto FC (April 14) and on the road against Columbus (April 19) and D.C. United (May 3). He also had four goals in a four-game span in June and July, a run that included the first multi-goal game of his MLS career on June 23 when he scored twice in a 3-0 win over Toronto FC, the first of which was the game-winner. After scoring at home against Chivas USA on July 7, he tallied the game-winner on the road against New York a week later, helping the Revs claim a 1-0 win. He picked up assists at LA on May 12 and against Columbus on June 16. He made the 100th appearance of his MLS career on August 2, playing 79 minutes in a 2-0 home win over Kansas City. Dorman started and played 90 minutes in the Revs’ 3-2 win at FC Dallas in the U.S. Open Cup Final on October 3, giving the club its first-ever championship. He started all four of the Revs’ Open Cup games that year and played all but 33 minutes in the team’s run through the tournament. He made one appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs, coming on in the 80th minute of the MLS Cup defeat to Houston on November 18 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. At the conclusion of the season, he signed with Scottish Premier League side St. Mirren on a free transfer.

2006: Started all 32 regular-season games, one of six MLS players in MLS to start every game on the year, while playing a career-high 2,834 minutes, which were the sixth most in MLS. Scored six goals and added a team-leading 10 assists, which were the third-most in MLS while his 33 shots on goal were the fifth-most in the league. Named the Midnight Riders’ Man of the Year, he finished the season with three game-tying goals while also scoring in three straight games between June 11, when he scored a 94th minute equalizer in the first-ever game at Chicago’s Toyota Park, one minute after setting up a goal for Steve Ralston that cut New England’s deficit to 3-2, and June 21, helping the Revs tie all three contests. To open the season, Dorman set up Clint Dempsey’s game-winning goal at LA on April 1, leading the Revs to a season opening win over the Galaxy in a rematch of MLS Cup 2005. He had a pair of two-assist games, the first two of his MLS career, at Colorado on July 4 and at D.C. United on October 7. Dorman started all four of the Revs’ MLS Cup Playoff matches, assisting on Taylor Twellman’s goal against Chicago in the second game of the Eastern Conference Semifinal, beginning the Revs’ comeback from a 2-0 series deficit.

2005: Dorman appeared in 30 matches, starting 19, mostly as a central midfielder in the team’s five-man midfield. Recorded two goals and added five assists to tie for fifth on the team. Made his season debut and scored his first goal of the year on April 9, scoring the Revs’ third goal in a 3-0 win over Columbus. His only other goal came late in second half stoppage time of the Revs’ 1-1 draw on the road against the LA Galaxy on July 4. Three of his five assists set up game-winners, including two on goals scored after the 80th minute in the month of August. He made one postseason appearance, coming on as a substitute in second half stoppage time of MLS Cup 2005 against LA on November 11 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.

2004: Made 20 regular-season appearances in his rookie season with the Revs, starting twice. Finished seventh on the team in scoring with two goals while also adding an assist, despite playing just 365 minutes. He made his MLS debut as a late substitute on April 17 against San Jose and made his first start on June 12 on the road against Dallas. Dorman recorded his first professional goal and assist in the same game – at Dallas on August 11 – when he assisted on Taylor Twellman’s 86th minute goal and then scored the team’s third goal in second half stoppage time of a 3-0 win. Scored his second goal of the year in the next game – at D.C. United on August 14 – scoring an 85th-minute equalizer. He came off the bench in all three of the Revs’ MLS Cup Playoff games, assisting on Twellman’s goal in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinal Series against Columbus on October 31, a goal that proved to be the series-winner.

CLUB CAREER OUTSIDE OF MLS
Signed with St. Mirren of the Scottish Premier League following the 2007 MLS season and made his SPL debut on Jan. 19, 2008, recording an assist against Motherwell. Upon his arrival, Dorman scored three goals and added three assists in 18 appearances through the end of the 2007-08 season. In his first full season at St. Mirren, Dorman emerged as one of the club’s top players, making 36 appearances in the 2008-09 season, scoring 10 goals and adding four assists. He continued that form the following season, scoring six goals and adding eight assists in 34 appearances. He moved to English Championship side Crystal Palace ahead of the 2010-11 season, making his Championship debut in a 3-2 win against Leicester City on Aug. 7, 2010. He scored one goal and added an assist in 21 appearances for the club before joining League Two’s Bristol Rovers on loan in November 2011. After his loan to Bristol Rovers was extended through the end of the 2011-12 season, he scored two goals and added one assist in 25 appearances for the club before his contract with Crystal Palace ended in August 2012, allowing him to move back to MLS for the start of the 2013 season.  

WALES NATIONAL TEAM
Was capped three times by Wales, including his international debut on May 23, 2010 in a 2-0 loss at Croatia. His two other caps came in the 2011 Carling Nations Cup against Scotland, a 3-1 loss on May 25, 2011 and against Northern Ireland a 2-0 win on May 27, 2011.

COLLEGE
Was a four-year player at Boston University (2000-03) where he was a three-time All-New England and three-time all-conference honoree. He left the program holding the career assist record with 37 while also tallying 22 goals. He ranked fourth nationally as a senior with 0.71 assists per game while his 13 assists as a junior were the second-highest single-season total in Terrier history.
