Another home win for the New England Revolution calls for another shoutout for the players who made it possible, with winger Luca Langoni and center back Mamadou Fofana earning spots on the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi for their standout performances in Saturday’s 3-0 win over CF Montréal.
It’s the second time in just five games that Langoni has secured a spot amongst the week’s best XI. His first nod came after a hat trick of assists helped the Revs claim their first win of the season against FC Cincinnati. The latest arrives following his goal-and-assist outing, which propelled New England to their dominant win against Montréal over the weekend.
With one goal and five assists, the Argentine leads the Revolution in goal contributions and ranks amongst the league leaders in assists. He trails only Los Angeles FC’s Son Heung-min in assists and is tied for second with NYCFC’s Maxi Moralez.
This week’s Team of the Matchday honors also marks the second time Langoni and a Revolution defender have been named together, underscoring the team’s growing confidence on set pieces. Langoni and Fofana connected on a free kick that produced Fofana’s first MLS goal. It was the third time this season that Langoni has created a set-piece goal for a Revolution center back.
“We really work on set pieces a lot,” head coach Marko Mitrović explained following the match. “Probably three to four times per week, they stay and practice their set pieces. They also practice with those guys that would execute in the box. I'm also happy for Mamadou [Fofana] that he scored the goal, because it's another part that we really invest in, together with Mamadou, a lot of time and energy for us to convince Mamadou how dangerous he can be.”
Fofana also played a major role defensively, helping the Revolution secure their first shutout of the season. After Langoni opened the scoring and assisted Fofana, youngster Peyton Miller added a third in stoppage time, sealing New England’s second three-point result in Foxborough as they kicked off a three-game homestand.
The Revolution now sit ninth in the Eastern Conference with 11 goals through five matches. At this point last season, they had scored just three, a testament to Mitrović’s attacking philosophy and the freedom he gives players to push forward no matter their position on the pitch.
New England will look to continue their strong home form this Saturday as D.C. United visits Foxborough. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET and serve as the second annual Olivia Knighton Foundation Match.
