Win, Lose or Draw: Dissecting the scenarios for Saturday’s second leg vs. NY

Jermaine Jones vs. New York Red Bulls

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – For the second straight series in these MLS Cup Playoffs, a first-leg victory on the road has put the New England Revolution in strong position heading into the second leg at home.

This time it’s the Eastern Conference Championship against the New York Red Bulls, which the Revs opened with a dramatic 2-1 victory at Red Bull Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The series wraps up on Saturday at Gillette Stadium (3 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network and Univision Deportes), where one of these two sides will be crowned Eastern Conference champion and book a spot in MLS Cup.

For the Revs, it’s a pretty simple formula: a win or draw this weekend will see them through to their first MLS Cup since 2007. But because of the away-goals tiebreaker and the Revs’ 2-1 win at Red Bull Arena, a loss doesn’t necessarily spell the end. That, of course, is where it gets tricky.

Here are the scenarios you’ll need to know ahead of Saturday’s match.

New England wins the Eastern Conference and advances to MLS Cup with …

  • A win, draw or 1-0 loss
    • Revs would advance based on aggregate goals with a win or draw
    • Revs would advance based on the away-goals tiebreaker with a 1-0 loss

New York wins the Eastern Conference and advances to MLS Cup with …

  • A win by two or more goals
    • Red Bulls would advance based on aggregate goals
  • A one-goal win, provided New York scores three or more goals (3-2, 4-3, 5-4, etc.)
    • Red Bulls would advance based on the away-goals tiebreaker

The series will require extra time if and only if …

  • New York defeats New England by a score of 2-1
    • Extra time consists of two 15-minute halves, followed by penalty kicks if the series remains tied on aggregate goals

So this we know: someone will be lifting the Eastern Conference Championship trophy on Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, whether it’s at the end of 90 minutes, 120 minutes or a penalty shootout.

What we don’t know yet is exactly how the second leg with play out. That’ll have to wait until Saturday.
