Bye weekend “convenient” for Farrell, who gets extra time to recover from injury

Andrew Farrell 2014 Lemieux Story

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – There’s no good time to pick up an injury, particularly in the postseason. But at the very least, Andrew Farrell’s right leg injury may have come at the least devastating time.

Farrell, who suffered the knock in training late last week, was forced to miss the second and decisive leg of the Revolution’s Eastern Conference Semifinal series with the Columbus Crew. Kevin Alston stepped in at right back and helped the Revs see out a comfortable 7-3 victory on aggregate.

Now Farrell has two full weeks to work his way back to fitness before the Revs kick off the Eastern Conference Championship against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, Nov. 23 at Red Bull Arena.

“It’s really convenient, actually,” Farrell said about the extended break, enforced by the FIFA international fixture window. “I have this whole week to get back on my feet, start jogging and get agility in. Then I have that full week next week to get into full training and stay fit.”

Instead of having to rush his recovery – and risk additional injury – Farrell can ease his way back into the mix and steadily rebuild his strength. He started the week with some rehab work indoors before progressing to agility exercises on Tuesday, and hopes to be back in full training by next week when the Revs delve deeper into their preparations for New York.

Farrell said he was already feeling better after his workouts early this week – “My legs are sore, but it’s a good sore,” he said – and he has his sights set on being available for selection for that first leg in New Jersey next weekend.

For now, though, the Revolution’s athletic training staff will continue to monitor him day-by-day.

“He’s progressing well,” said Jay Heaps. “It’s a good week to get him back up to speed.”
