Marko Mitrović enters his first season as Head Coach of the New England Revolution in 2026, following his appointment to the position on Nov. 7, 2025. The 10th head coach in club history, Mitrović brings 15 years of coaching experience including successful tenures as a head coach for youth national teams of the United States and his native Serbia. As an assistant coach, Mitrović has four previous seasons of MLS experience with Chicago Fire FC, spent two years in the English Championship with Reading FC, and helped guide the Serbia Under-20 Men’s National Team to a FIFA U-20 World Cup title.
Prior to joining New England, Mitrović compiled a 19-9-7 record as a head coach for the United States across multiple youth levels. He most recently led the U.S. Under-20 side to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup quarterfinals in Chile, earning decisive 3-0 wins against two European powerhouses, France and Italy. Mitrović earned the opportunity after leading the United States Olympic Team at the 2024 Paris Games, where he also reached the quarterfinals. Mitrović joined U.S. Soccer as the head coach of the Under-19 team from 2022-23, winning all four of his friendly matches at the helm.
Mitrović, a UEFA Pro License holder, returns for his second stint in MLS after previously serving four years as an assistant coach for Chicago Fire FC from 2016-19 under compatriot Veljko Paunovic. He helped guide Chicago to a third-place finish in the Eastern Conference and the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2017. With the Fire, Mitrović worked with current Revolution midfielder Matt Polster for three seasons. While in Chicago, he also earned the opportunity to coach in the 2017 MLS All-Star Game against Real Madrid at Soldier Field.
After departing Chicago, Mitrović spent parts of two seasons as Paunovic’s assistant with Reading FC, finishing seventh in the Championship his first year. During the 2021-22 season, Mitrović took charge for a pair of matches while Paunovic was out with illness, earning his first victory over Birmingham City on Nov. 6, 2021. At the club level, Mitrović has held roles as an assistant coach for Serbian clubs FK Banat Zrenjanin and FK Napredak Kruševac.
Hailing from Belgrade, Serbia, Mitrović earned his first head coaching opportunity with his boyhood academy, leading the Red Star Belgrade Under-15 side for two seasons from 2013-15. During his time with Red Star, Mitrović also served as an assistant coach for the Serbia U-20 national team from 2012-15, and the U-15 side from 2014-16. The Serbia Under-20 team enjoyed sustained success during Mitrović’s tenure, winning the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup with a victory over Brazil after extra time in the Final, and finishing third at the 2014 UEFA European U-19 Championship.
Before entering the coaching ranks, Mitrović played 16 seasons of professional football in Europe spanning clubs in Serbia, Hungary, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. The former midfielder began his career in the esteemed Red Star Belgrade Academy, making his professional debut for the club in 1996 at 17 years old. During his youth career, Mitrović earned one call-up to the FR Yugoslavia Under-18 National Team for the 1995 UEFA European U-18 Championship, where he appeared in a pair of group stage victories over Austria and Georgia.
After featuring for multiple clubs in Serbia and one season in Hungary, Mitrović returned home to sign with FK Budućnost Banatski Dvor. In three seasons, Mitrović made 85 appearances, helping earn promotion to the Serbian top flight in 2002-03, a berth in the Serbian Cup Final in 2004, and qualification to the 2004-05 UEFA Europa League. Mitrović retired from professional football in 2010.
Mitrović, 47, became a naturalized U.S. Citizen in 2024. He earned his education from the Mathematical Grammar School in his native Belgrade, graduating in 1997. Mitrović holds a UEFA Pro coaching license and has served as a UEFA Official Lecturer for both A and B license courses.
He is married to his wife, Marija, with whom he shares three children: Mitar, Matija, and Mia. His eldest son, Mitar, is a graduate student on the Men’s Soccer Team at the University of Michigan after three years at Marquette University. His youngest son, Matija, is a midfielder for Portuguese Primeira Liga side Vitoria SC and spent time in the Chicago Fire FC Academy. Mitrović and Marija enjoy espresso, long walks and skiing.
The youngest of three siblings, Mitrović comes from a family rooted in academics. His father, Stanko, was an engineer, a path also followed by his older brother Vladimir, who now resides in the United States. His sister, Jelena, is a surgeon, while his mother, Jelica, has a background in linguistics.
